Best International Power Adapter

Unfortunately for Americans working abroad, US electrical plugs don’t work in most other countries. When you rely on a laptop and smartphone to pay the bills, this reality poses a problem. To stay charged up overseas, digital nomads need a reliable adapter. Our research and experience convinced us that the best international power adapter is the BESTEK 250W, 220V to 110V Step Down Travel Voltage Converter.

Why Trust Our International Power Adapter Recommendation?

Neither of us are electrical engineers. Quite the opposite, Jenna studied language and world literature, and Chipp studied political science and accounting. So, if you’re looking for advice on rewiring a house, look elsewhere!

But, we both did spend a year traveling the world and working remotely, to say nothing of the regular trips back to Ukraine to visit Jenna’s family. As digital nomads 100% reliant on our laptops and smartphones to work, this time overseas meant we needed to find a reliable power adapter. And, as we set off on our travels, we didn’t actually know where we’d be going (after our first stop in Turkey), so we needed a device that would work everywhere.

We conducted a ton of front-end research, and the BESTEK voltage converter absolutely checked all the boxes we needed. Fast forward to our travels, and we spent a year putting this piece of gear through the travel/work wringer. We ran into plenty of issues during our time working abroad, but charging our laptops, phones, and e-readers was never one!

Why We Love the BESTEK 250W, 220V to 110V Step Down Travel Voltage Converter

Working in Cape Town and getting ready to set up our international power adapter

Best Features

  • Universal use: We left the States without a clear itinerary, instead picking our next destination one country at a time. So, we couldn’t limit ourselves to a power adapter that only worked in certain regions. Instead, going with the BESTEK option, we knew we’d have an adapter that would work in every place we visited.

  • Multiple outlets: Traveling and working as a couple, we couldn’t very well just charge one laptop at a time. We needed a power adapter that we could both use at the same time with our computers. This adapter has three AC outlets, letting us charge our laptops concurrently.

  • Separate USB outlets: And, as we often used our smartphones as wifi hotspots, we needed to charge those, too. BESTEK’s international power adapter has four USB ports for phone chargers (or any other USB charger), all of which can be used in conjunction with the three AC outlets.

  • Ease of replacing key parts: Here’s some electricity jargon we learned… The main portion of this adapter is actually the converter, which changes the voltage levels from foreign specs to the US-standard 110 volts (helps keep your gear from frying). On the other hand, the adapters are the little plastic parts that let you plug the BESTEK into different countries’ outlets. These little adapters are easy to forget places (which we did several times…). But, you can run into any corner store to buy a cheap replacement adapter which will attach to the converter’s cord. No one wants to toss a reliable (and not inexpensive) converter because you lost a single adapter!

Story from the Road

As we mentioned above, it’s fairly easy to forget one of the BESTEK’s adapters in an outlet somewhere. Without thinking, you pull the converter’s cord out of the wall but leave the adapter plugged in. This isn’t a great situation, as it turns your converter into a worthless paperweight until you can find a replacement adapter for the region.

Fortunately, finding these replacement adapters is pretty easy to do, something we discovered the hard (easy?) way. While we were living in Cape Town, we took a weekend trip out to Stellenbosch for some hiking in wine country. During this “staycation” of sorts, we both had to do a little work (plus charge our phones), so we brought our power adapter.

After a somewhat rushed check-out from the room we rented and drive back into Cape Town, we realized we’d left the adapter in the wall back in Stellenbosch. Without it, our BESTEK was temporarily useless in South Africa. A short stroll to a local corner store later, we had a new adapter (for the equivalent of a couple bucks). As we learned, these little adapters are absolutely ubiquitous in bazaars and shops around the world, and they all plug right onto the BESTEK’s cord. Far easier to replace these little plastic parts than an entire power adapter system!
